Thank a Lineworker on April 18

If you were asked to associate an image or a person with Golden Valley Electric Association, chances are you would picture a lineworker. Some of the most visible employees of the co-op, lineworkers work tirelessly to ensure that the Interior receives uninterrupted power 24/7.

This Sunday, April 18, is National Lineworker Appreciation Day. It’s a chance to recognize and celebrate the men and women who respond swiftly and safely to restore power to our communities.

GVEA serves over 36,000 members, with over 45,000 meters – that’s nearly 100,000 residents across the Interior, from Fairbanks to Delta Junction, Nenana, Healy and Cantwell as well as residents living on Steese Highway, Elliott Highway and Chena Hot Springs Road. Our lineworkers routinely go above and beyond to serve our members and maintain over 3,200 miles of line.

Being a lineworker in Interior Alaska is a demanding and dangerous profession. It takes years of specialized training, ongoing education, dedication and an equally important sense of service and commitment.

No matter the temperature or severity of the storm, the time of day or night, or whether it’s a workday or a holiday, GVEA lineworkers leave the comfort of home to tackle challenging jobs in an extreme environment. A perfect example – during the record Easter weekend snowfall, crews were out restoring power around the clock. This dedication and sense of service to the community is exceptional and truly sets them apart. Make sure you check out this Fairbanks Daily News Miner article from last Sunday: A tale of two linemen: For GVEA crews, Easter weekend blizzard was just another snowstorm to work through.

While lineworkers may be the most visible employees at GVEA, they are not alone. Every one of GVEA’s employees plays a critical role to ensure that we fulfill our mission of providing safe, reliable electric at fair and reasonable prices. GVEA is truly a team that works together to power Interior Alaska.

We are proud of our dedicated GVEA lineworkers. They deserve all the appreciation and accolades that come their way on Lineworker Appreciation Day.
