Have you been searching for coal?

by | Jan 15, 2011 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

Some of our readers have been searching this blog for “coal,” so we thought coal deserved a post.

Our least expensive source of power is coal. However, in 2010, only 28 percent of GVEA’s power was generated by coal-fired power plants. Why only 28 percent? Because that’s all the coal-fired power we have access to. It includes our Healy Power Plant and Aurora Energy’s power plant in downtown Fairbanks.

The remainder of our power was produced by hydro (5 percent), natural gas (29 percent) and oil (38 percent). So, the biggest piece of pie is oil. And oil is also the most expensive source of electricity.
