Laura Wilson, development director for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Fairbanks displays gratitude for a Good¢ents grant for computers.

The second round of Good¢ents grants amounting to $29,300 were awarded on November 14. Here’s a breakdown of the six projects the trustees elected to fund:

  • Breast Cancer Detection Center of Alaska: $15,000 (the maximum organization grant) awarded to support the digital imaging coach. BCDC’s coach travels around the state offering mammograms to all Alaskan women regardless of ability to pay.
  • Fairbanks North Star Borough School District: $1,300 awarded to cover the cost of one automated external defibrillator (AED) in a FNSB school. The district has 35 schools. AED Helping Hearts is working to outfit each school with an AED.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters: $2,500 grant awarded for the purchase of computer equipment for administration.
  • Love INC: $2,500 awarded for resource closet equipment that will aid in the organization of donated items and make distributions to local families in need more efficient.
  • Individual: $5,000 awarded to help with emergency medical expenses. The $5,000 award is the maximum individual award allowed. Total medical expenses for this family amount to an estimated $250,000.
  • Individual: $3,000 awarded for post fire electrical repair materials.
  • Individual: A maximum of $5,000 was awarded to a Denali Borough resident undergoing cancer treatment.

Good¢ents is a bill round up program through Golden Valley Electric Association. Members’ electric bills are rounded up to the next whole dollar with the remaining cents donated to the separate Good¢ents fund. Since the launch of the program in March 2011, GVEA members have voluntarily contributed more than $88,000. Total monies distributed to date: $44,950.
