In late November, the Good¢ents Board of Trustees reviewed 18 applications and awarded nine grants totaling $31,384. Here is a breakdown of the awards:

  • $8,000 to the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival for sound equipment, computers and software. The items will travel to communities throughout GVEA’s service area.
  • $5,000 to the Alaska Center for Children and Adults for the development of a community center. The community center will be used by individuals and families with disabilities.
  • $4,589 to Morning Star Ranch for a self-feeding pellet stove. Morning Star Ranch is a therapeutic ranch for both children and young adults experiencing developmental delays.
  • $4,000 to the Dance Theatre of Fairbanks for an energy-efficiency project. The funds will be used to insulate and cover windows.
  • $3,320 to the American Red Cross of Alaska for 20 cots that meet the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Americans with Disabilities Act requirements for sheltering individuals with special needs.
  • $1,085 to Santa’s Senior Center to purchase a defibrillator for the facility.
  • $1,000 to Habitat for Humanity toward the purchase of energy-efficient appliances. The appliances will be installed in a home that was built this past summer.
  • $1,390 to an individual, whose home was recently burglarized, for the purchase of an electric water heater.

All money from the Good¢ents foundation is awarded locally to nonprofit organizations and individuals in need.

Applications are reviewed quarterly in February, May, August and November by a volunteer board of trustees. The next application deadline is January 31. Applications and more information about the program can be found online at gvea.com/goodcents.

Good¢ents is funded by the members of Golden Valley Electric Association. Since the program began in 2011, GVEA members have granted nearly $260,000 to local nonprofits and individuals in need.
